If you love horror films, it is likely that you have an affection for the modern super-hero sub genre as well. This week, coinciding with the release of Iron Man 3, Doc and Thomas delve into the films from Marvel Studios and those properties that got away (some of which have already returned to the fold). The ascention of what Marvel calls Phase 1 and the beginning of Phase 2 has audiences on the edge of their seat. Beginning with Iron Man, introducing Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Marvel struck gold and have not stopped since.

However, before getting into The Avengers, Doc and Thomas take a look at the films from other studios using licensed Marvel properties. It began in 1998 with Wesley Snipes as Blade which is sold as a full blown horror film. The film launches a franchise with two sequels and a brief TV series. Then X-Men and Spider-Man arrive changing the face of superheroes in film. Both directors, Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi show they not only know the source material but they have great respect for it as well producing two of the best super-hero films to this day: X-Men 2 and Spider-Man 2. Then things start to wobble a bit as they cover Fantastic Four films, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and Punisher. Regardless, super-heroes are here to stay.

In 2009, Marvel Studios is born as they begin to steer their own properties (the ones that remain in their care) into movies of their own beginning with Iron Man. A little known property, compared to Spider-Man and Wolverine, Iron Man is a risky move, but the risk pays off. Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr. as its star, is a huge hit. The Hulk quickly follows. While not as big a hit as Iron Man, The Hulk solidifies Marvel Studios entry into film history. They also begin their unique brand of universe building, introducing the concept of Phase I. Iron Man 2 follows along with Thor and Captain America. While each stands on its own, they combine to build toward one of the highest grossing films in history, The Avengers. Doc and Thomas take a look at each film as well as Iron Man3 which begins Phase 2 leading up to the upcoming Avengers 2.

The Following is FOX's latest hit television series already renewed for a second season. Along with Kevin Bacon as the show's protagonists, James Purefoy stars as serial killer and cult leader Dr. Joe Carroll. Kevin Williamson uses his highly successful 24 (also on FOX) show as a model for this series that has a retire FBI agent brought back into the foray when the serial killer he helped catch escapes with the help of a cult following. The show is rich with character development, especially between Bacon's Ryan Hardy and Purefoy's Joe Carroll. Shawn Ashmore also makes an impression as young agent, Mike Weston.

Also on Monday night is A&E's genre related offering, Bates Motel based on Psycho from Robert Bloch (and the famous film from Alfred Hitchcock). The series, brought to life by Mark Wolper and Carlton Cuse (from LOST), has Norma and Norman Bates purchasing the Seafarer Motel from foreclosure renaming it Bates Motel. Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore give the show award worthy performances as the high-strung and unstable lead characters. The show is deliciously campy and pure entertainment, winning it an early renewal for a second season by its second show.

Thursday nights on NBC bring Hannibal based on Red Dragon featuring Will Graham, Jack Crawford and, of course, Dr. Hannibal Lector as portrayed by Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne and Mads Mikkelsen. The show from the mind of Bryan Fuller is bold, gory and thoroughly engrossing. There may be nothing more gruesome on network television than episode two's garden bed of mushroom people. Gasp.

In addition to these brilliant horror television shows, Doc Rotten and Dave Dreher discuss modern genre TV from AMC's The Walking Dead to Hemlock Grove on Netflix. The amount of quality content is astounding and worth a look with many recommendations for whatever sub genre you enjoy: zombies, vampires, werewolves, serial killers and more. It's a great time to be a horror fan!

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the Monster Movie Podcast. Join us this week for G.I. Take a brief excursion into more action-oriented monster (of a sort), Doc Rotten and Thomas Mariani review G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Then they preview the trailer for this summer's upcoming blockbuster, The Wolverine. Up last is the recap and review of the season 3 finale of The Walking Dead.

With its ninjas, megalomaniacs and super-heroic deeds, G.I. Joe: Retaliation rests on the fringes of the show's Monsters from the Movies theme, but Doc and Thomas were eager to give the film a shot. Dwayne The Rock Johnson has already saved two franchises; it is likely he was set to save a third with this sequel to the dismal G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. Surprise, surprise, director Jon M. Chu manages to break the mold and elevate the series to a watchable, entertaining, but brain-dead thrill-fest.

Straying not too far from G.I. Joe is James Mangold's The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman returning as the mutant, Logan. Doc and Thomas have high hopes this film will rise above its predecessor as well. In this preview, the Wolverine goes to Japan to face off ninjas (should be The Hand), Viper and The Silver Samurai. Superhero action from Twentieth Century Fox as they up their game to compete with the juggernaut that is Marvel Studios holding onto their licenses for the X-Men franchise.

The Walking Dead has become a TV heavy weight with AMC televising the finale for season three on March 31st. Did the show live up to the high praises Doc and Thomas have been singing for earlier episodes this past spring, such as "Clear?" How many cast members died? How many survived? Did Rick get to off the Governor or what? Did Andrea get what was coming to her? Ha! The show remains one of the best horror-theme events on TV.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the Monster Movie Podcast. This week Doc Rotten and Thomas Mariani cover the films an career of John Carpenter, one of the most influential horror directors of the modern era. From Halloween to Escape from New York to The Thing, John Carpenter shaped the future of horror, setting trends and creating sub-genres. He's responsible for such horror icons as Michael Myers, Snake Plissken and Jack Burton. He's even directed a film about Elvis. He's worked with such movie greats as Jamie Lee Curtis, Kurt Russell, Donald Pleasence and Jeff Bridges, who received an academy award nomination for Best Actor.

Walking through John Carpenter's career, Doc and Thomas start with his films from the Seventies including Dark Star, Assault on Precinct 13 and Elvis which features his first collaboration with Kurt Russell. Of course, they spend a considerable amount of time with his first big hit, Halloween launching a franchise and a number of careers including Jamie Lee Curtis and firmly establishing the slasher sub-genre.

The Eighties provides Doc and Thomas plenty of favorite Carpenter films to discuss. Doc favors Big Trouble in Little China, while Thomas has trouble deciding which other Carpenter/Russell feature is his top pic, Escape from New York or John Carpenter's The Thing. The Fog, They Live and Prince of Darkness get some love while the two also discuss Christine, Starman and They Live.

The Nineties brings another favorite for Thomas, the much overlooked In the Mouth of Madness while the other films start to leave less and less an impact, films like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned and Escape from L.A. which is yet another Carpenter film to feature Kurt Russel in the lead role.

The later films start to bring the tone of the podcast down a bit as Doc and Thomas talk about Vampires, Ghosts of Mars and The Ward. Still the duo hang on to hope that John Carpenter can return to glory with another cinematic masterpiece that his early career provided.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the Monster Movie Podcast. Join us this week for balloons, baboons and buffoons as co-hosts Doc Rotten and Thomas Mariani take a merry ole trip to Oz! This is episode 44, recorded March 11, 2013. Sam Raimi is back with Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful featuring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. Robert Downey Jr. is back in the trailer for Shane Black's Iron Man 3. And Andrew Lincoln and David Morrissey face off as Rick and the Governor on The Walking Dead.

As children, the earliest exposure to elements of horror are those found in fairy tales and in classic children's movies such as The Wizard of Oz. L. Frank Baum's much beloved book series are the inspiration for Disney's and Sam Raimi's revisit to the land of Oz. Oz the Great and Powerful follows the adventures of Oscar Diggs (Franc), Oz for short, a magician for a traveling circus who is whisked away by a tornado while stopped in Kansas. He lands in Oz, meets Theodora (Kunis) and cons the entire kingdom into believing he is the great and powerful wizard of Oz. Doc and Thomas love the film but debate its troubled second act while Thomas has trouble with the wicked witch herself.

Iron Man launched a super-heroic franchise for Marvel Studios in 2008 and Tony Start & Crew are back for Iron Man 3. This time, they face the villainy of The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), a ruthless terrorist out to destroy Stark. Directed by Shane Black, the trailer promises unbelievable and unparalleled action - and an army of Iron Man suits at Stark's side. Doc and Thomas barely contain their excitement for this upcoming summer blockbuster as they discuss the merits of the trailer and the promise of Kingsley's Mandarin.

Then, the dastardly duo continue their look into AMC's hit, hot, zombie TV show The Walking Dead. With Arrow on the Doorpost, Rick finally meets and faces the Governor as Andrea arranges their meeting to negotiate peace. The Governor has other plans. The show continues to build and build toward the inevitable confrontation between Rick and his survivors and those living at Woodbury.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the Monster Movie Podcast. Join us this week for the return of Nell Sweetzer, the return of Morgan Jones (SPOILERS!) and the return of James Wan. Oh, yeah, and Eli Roth presents some martial arts action. This is episode 43 recorded March 6, 2013. He's back! Regular co-host, Thomas, has returned just in time to rant and hate upon the latest devil-made-me-do-it flick, The Last Exorcism II. At least we talk about one of his favorite films of 2012, The Man with the Iron Fists in this week's VOD/DVD review. As fans of director James (Saw, Insidous) Wan, the trailer for The Conjuring is a must to discuss. And, this week contains an incredibly surprising and rewarding episode of AMC's The Walking Dead.

In 2010, director Daniel Stamm and producer Eli Roth released the found footage film The Last Exorcism where Father Cotten Marcus rediscovers his faith exorcising the demon, Abalam, from young, possessed Nell Sweetzer. Director Ed Gass-Donnelly brings the franchise back to the theaters with The Last Exorcism II jettisoning both Cotten Marcus and found-footage for a conventional sequel focusing on Nell instead. However, where ever Nell goes, Abalam is not far behind and another exorcism is soon needed. Doc and Thomas try to make sense of it all and come up empty handed.

Things get better with the release of the trailer for James Wan's much anticipated horror release following his smash hit Insidious, The Conjuring. The trailer reveals the set up for the haunted house flick without revealing the ghosts, stars or story. Thomas is confused and unimpressed but Doc reassures him that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are in the film even though the trailer only contains one very frightened Lili Taylor.

Next up is a conversation about the latest episode of The Walking Dead entitled "Clear" where Morgan Jones, the neighbor who saves Rick in the pilot episode of season one, returns but is far from the same man. It's all about Rick, Carl and Michone providing one of the best episodes of the show so far. Brilliant horror television!

Last up is another feature from producer Eli Roth, the RZA directed martial arts flick The Man with the Iron Fists. Action packed and gory as hell, the movie provide plenty for Doc and Thomas to rave about from The Brass Body to Russell Crowe as Jack the Knife.
