Trailer: Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters (2013)

Coming to theaters January 2013 is Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D. The film starts Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the title characters with Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare and Zoe Bell rounding out the cast. We’ll take all the Peter Stormare we can get.

The film was originally scheduled to be release this past spring but was pushed back January of 2013 to capitalize on the potential of its star Jeremy Renner becoming a big name with his other, higher profile summer films. The films include The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy. Not too shabby. It may have also been based on the strong performances from a number of genre films that were released early in 2012. Either way, horror fans will finally get to see the film in a few short months.

What has Doc Rotten stoked to see this film is the director, Tommy Wirkola who directed Dead Snow a few years back with this being his followup film. His style and tone displayed in Dead Snow is fantastic and it is illustrated in the trailer as well. Unfortunately, however, the trailer appears to be cut to  resemble last decade’s Van Helsing far too closely for comfort. Sigh. Holding on to hope, the film still has potential to pull it out and be another entry along the lines of Resident Evil or Underworld.

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think.

  • You know when Gretel introduces herself and her brother Hansel, I really wanted her to conclude with the line “We hunt witches.” to give it a complete “Bonnie and Clyde” feel.

I agree with your comment on the recent podcast about this feeling a bit like “Van Helsing”, but like that former movie, it has an interesting concept and hopefully this time it will be handled better. I like the idea of reworking familiar concepts into new ideas and this definitely shows promise. But then again, so did “Van Helsing”.

And speaking of delayed movies featuring a pre-industrial, “vanquishing evil spirits” hero types, I wonder if you have any interest in the “Solomon Kane” movie that was finally released in 2012 in the states far from its initial release in 2009 overseas. I believe it’s actually available on demand and I have considered giving it a go. Or at least waiting to see it released on Netflix. It would make make for an interesting comparison to “Hansel and Gretel”.
